How to properly prep for GelX

To ensure the longevity of Gel-X nails, it's very important to start with a meticulous and precise preparation routine. Proper nail prep lays the foundation for everything that follows, ensuring the Gel-X tips bond securely to the natural nail and last as long as possible without lifting or peeling. Skipping or rushing through these steps can lead to premature lifting, weak adhesion, and ultimately shorten the life of your Gel-X. Simply put, preparation is the backbone of long-lasting Gel-X nails—if you neglect this step, the best products in the world won’t achieve the durable, high-quality results you’re aiming for.

How do you go about it, let's start by cleaning the cuticle and by doing that we want to gently push back the cuticles. This initial step is vital as any remaining cuticle on the nail plate will disrupt adhesion, resulting in lifting. Following the cuticle care, eliminate any cuticle that will likely be in the way by using your nippers. Be cautious when nipping because we don't want to cut in too deep which will cause bleeding. Make sure to buff the nails as we don't want any kind of shine. Once shine is removed proceed to cleanse the nails with alcohol to eliminate any oils or debris.

Now it's time to size your nail tips and getting the right size for the Gel-X tips is key. Each tip should cover both stress points and fit your cuticle line perfectly. A tip that’s too small or too large can cause lifting, discomfort, or a bulky look. After sizing make sure to etch the underside of the Gel-X tip. There are 2 option to etching the nail tip. You can use Gel X-Prep to chemically etch until the logo disappears or use a small sanding band to do so. This step ensures maximum grip between the natural nail and the tip.

nail prep sizing

After sizing, apply pH Bonder to balance the nail's pH, followed by a non-acidic primer to prep the natural nail. Then, apply a layer of Extend Gel or a base gel and cure for 30 seconds to create a sticky base.

Once all step is completed you are well on your way to applying the GelX tips. One common mistake is failing to remove excess gel from the skin, which may lead to irritation and lifting. It is important to always check for any leftover gel and eliminate it after the final curing process. Keep in mind that each application presents an opportunity to refine your technique. Regular practice will enhance your confidence and efficiency. If you have any questions, feel free to leave comments – there is always room for learning and improvement!
